Few gemstones have a story as extraordinary as moldavite. Formed nearly 15 million years ago, this remarkable green natural glass was created when a massive meteorite struck the Earth near today's Ries Crater in southern Germany. The tremendous impact melted surrounding rocks and sent molten material soaring through the atmosphere. As it cooled and solidified before landing, it formed the unique tektite now known as moldavite, found almost exclusively in the Czech Republic.
